Sy this time the other intended victims had escaped from the saloon, but Oirdner fired through the window at Councilman Gulp, the bullet striking the finger of Gulp's left hand, rresumahly in order to prevent another shot, Gulp dropped to the ground and pretended to be dead until such time as the murderer's attention should be attracted elsewhere.
Most of the bloody work he had planned having been done, the murderer then turned the rifle upon himself. His first shot did not get results so he placed his head directly in line with the gun barrel and fired again, getting results
that were not only satisfactory to himself but to society as well.
Investigation showed that Gardner had been deliberate in planning the kill¬ ing. After he was satisfied that his saloon license was to be revoked he went
to a hardware store where he bought shells for his rifle. He then placed in his pocket something like $400 in cash that was in the saloon, and shoved his hat be¬ neath the back of his coat that he was wearing in preparation for escape after his devilish work was done. It is stated that he had been in a state of intoxication most of the time for several months and that during the several days prior to the shooting had been more drunk than usual.
uis brother, "Curly" Gardner, who killed Collins and was thus the starter of
the trouble, had also been drinking heavily for several days. When we saw the latter in the county jail on Monday morning he was even then not fully sober. We would guess him to be about thirty years of age. ae is of burly physique. Al¬ though his countenance is not of a type that would necessarily indicate crim¬ inality it does foretell a rather unsympathetic and perhaps brutal nature that has been accentuated by bad living. In short, the whole deplorable affair was the direct result of liquor, aoth of the Gardners were drunic — very drunk, and while thus irresponsible the killing was done.
